The Exile, 1993

An allegory of the senses as the isolated inhabitantsof a golden Gothic garden in a series of eight oil & gold leaf paintings.

The Exile paintings take a look at the classical theme of the exile from the garden. As in The Perfect Existence in the Rose Garden, the format of these paintings is based on Stefano da Zevio’s fifteenth century painting, Madonna of the Rose Garden, in which the rose garden (a hortus conclusus) is fenced in, but has an entrance open at one end towards the viewer.
